Keimyung University Mechanical Engineering Major’s 3+2 degree program with United States’ Auburn University Showing Results

- In 2012 an academic exchange MOU was signed for the 3+2 degree program between Keimyung
University's Mechanical Engineering Department and Auburn University in the United States
- Starting in 2016 with the dispatch of three students, a total of 20 students have been dispatched as of
2023, results shown in local employment and further education.

Keimyung University's Mechanical Engineering Department has been continuously operating the 3+2 degree program with Auburn University, located in the state of Alabama in the United States, since 2016. Auburn University, with a 167 year history as of 2023, is a prestigious institution in Alabama and has produced notable alumni, including the current CEO of Apple, Tim Cook.

The Mechanical Engineering Department at Keimyung University established a program in 2012 through an academic exchange MOU with Auburn University in the United States. Under this program, students study at Keimyung University for three years and then transfer to Auburn University for two more years, allowing them to earn both a bachelor's degree from Keimyung University and a master's degree from Auburn University simultaneously. In 2016, the program selected its first batch of students, and since then, it has dispatched 20 students. Graduates who obtain their master's degree have achieved favorable outcomes, including immediate employment in the local job market or pursuing further studies.

Eligibility for this program is open to all Keimyung University's Mechanical Engineering students who have completed five or more semesters, have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher, have a score of B+ or higher in courses such as Statics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics, and Thermodynamics, and have a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 79 or a TOEIC score of 720.

The 3+2 degree program with Auburn University offers the advantage of affordable overseas education, as students can study at Auburn University in the United States using Keimyung University's tuition fees. Additionally, it provides opportunities for internships and research activities within the United States, making it highly appealing to students.

Jo Eun-hee, a student who is currently studying at Auburn University, said, as she expressed her satisfaction with the program, ‘I learned about the 3+2 program In my high school senior year which made me apply to Keimyung University’s Mechanical Engineering Department. Through the 3+2 program, I not only have the opportunity to conduct research in globally recognized fields in the United States but also learn about American culture and systems. I am currently researching ways to increase the efficiency and lifespan of electric vehicle batteries, and I plan to challenge myself with a doctor program in the United States after graduation.’

Professor Ha Ji Soo, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, said, ‘In addition to the 3+2 program, Keimyung University’s Mechanical Engineering Department operates international cooperation programs aimed at making students into global talents by providing them with diverse overseas experiences.’ He added, ‘Starting in 2024, we are also implementing a one-year dispatch program to Auburn University, which includes six months of academic study and six months of on-site internship in the United States.’

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Keimyung University was established in 1988 and has received an excellent rating (A+) in the industry-oriented department evaluation in 2020, which attests to its educational excellence. Building upon this outstanding educational system, student-led departmental club activities have borne fruit. Notably, the student-run automobile club 'SPEEDING' achieved overall victories in the University Student Self-made Car Competition in 2011 and 2019. Graduates from this team have gone on to work for domestic automobile manufacturers such as Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, Renault Korea, as well as regional mid-sized companies, contributing to the advancement of the Korean automotive industry.

In addition, the autonomous driving club 'BISA' has been participating in national competitions since 2010. They not only secured first place in the 2017 Hyundai Motor Group Autonomous Driving Car Competition but also solidified their status as a prestigious department by winning multiple awards, including the grand prize, in various categories at the 2nd Mando & HL Klemove Autonomous Driving Mobility Competition in 2022.
