KOREAN WAVE IN LITERARY AND CRITICAL CONTEXTS

본 과목은 한류와 전지구화라는 문화적 조류에 초점을 두어 한국 문학의 좌표와 정체성을 다루며, K-pop, Korean drama, Korean cinema 과 K-Literature 에 이르는 다양한 스펙트럼의 자료와 논문을 읽고 토론하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 서구에서 한국의 전통과 문화가 어떻게 수용되는지 살펴봄으로 한류의 가능성과 문제점을 함께 탐색하게 됩니다.

The objective of this course is to familiarize ourselves with the larger movement of culture across national borders and to generate critical contexts for understanding Korean culture and literature in a broader global framework, while focusing on the three major texts of "Tale of Ch'unhyang", "Please Look After Mom," and "The Vegetarian." In this course, students are expected to read assignments on time and attend all classes. They should fully participate in class discussions and activities as well. Some background knowledge of Korean literature is required, as well as the willingness to critically explore materials (both English and Korean) and conduct team-based research. [한글버전] 이 강좌는 국경을 넘어 글로벌적 관점에서 "한국문학"을 하나의 한류 현상으로 보면서 한국문학 텍스트가 어떤 방식으로 전파되고 읽혀지고 수용되고 있는지 분석하고 논의한다. 이를 위해 고전 텍스트 <춘향전>과 신경숙의 <엄마를 부탁해>와 한강의 <채식주의자>, 3개의 텍스트를 중심으로 한국 문화의 보편성과 특수성에 대해서 공부하게 된다. 학습자의 적극적인 수업 태도가 필수적이며 한국문학에 대한 기본 소양과 배경지식이 요구되며 영어로 말하고 읽고 쓰는 훈련을 시도함을 목표로 둔다.

춣석 및 참여 15% 수강자들의 능동적 참여가 필수적인 교과목이므로 출석/참여율이 학점에 적극적으로 반영되며, 6번 이상 결석한 학습자는 자동으로 실격 처리가 된다. Group Presentation 20% During the term, students will be grouped with other students and tackle with the topic question of “Which literary work do we think well represents Korean culture/identity?” The discussion can be extended to the prospect of Korean literature.” After research and discussion, each group will give a presentation in front of class for 20-25 minutes. Writing Assignment 45% Students will be given prompt questions and write about their views, opinions, and analysis. The writing assignment should be readable and also typed in using appropriate format [two page long; double- spaced; 12 point; standard fonts and margins]. Final Report 20% Each student should be prepared for 2 page long final report on the topic question of his or her own choice relating to Korean wave. Please consult the instructor in advance regarding the topic selection and receive the approval before submission.
