NARRATIVE AND IMAGE IN MODERN KOREAN LITERATURE(LECTURE IN ENGLISH)

  1. Course Description
    20세기동안의 한국 현대 문학과 영화제작의 전체적인 내용에 대해 다룰 것입니다. 이 수업의 목적은 문화를 통해서 다시 한번 우리의 지배적인 역사학에 대해 생각하게 만들게 될 것입니다. 예를들면, ‘제국주의,’ ‘도시화,’ ‘자본주의,’ ‘성별의식,’ ‘민족주의’의 개념적인 해석을 탐색하게 하고 도전을 하겠금 만들 것입니다. 수업을 진행하는 동안 여러분은 이와 같은 질문을 할 것이라 예상됩니다: 역사적, 문학적, 시각적으로 봤을 때 어떤 식으로 비슷한 점과 다른 점을 표현할 수 있을까? 문화 통해서 어떤 식으로 한국 근대화를 접할 수 있을까?
  2. Course Objectives
    Students will develop a sense of development of modern Korean literature and its relationship with aspects of Korean society and culture. In this course, students will be expected to closely read major literary texts of Korean literature from early modern to contemporary. Students should participate fully in class discussions and complete reading before coming to class. No background knowledge is required. Strong passion and commitment to understanding important concepts and literary works in English are highly required.
  3. Teachnig Method
    (1) 출석 Attendance (10%) : Students will be expected to think carefully about the literary and critical texts introduced each week to participate fully in class discussions and complete all the readings assigned before coming to each class. Please be sure to bring the assigned readings to class. (2) 과제 Writing Assignment (50%): One-page long response papers, based on the discussion questions for the week, will be due every two to three weeks. You may write freely about the fiction under discussion; or you may pose a question for yourself and discuss/answer the question and briefly explain its significance or context. (3) 발표 Presentation (20%): Each student will conduct research on a specific writer and share his or her findings about the writer. (4) 리딩 Reading (10%): To encourage the student's engagement with the English text, each student will be given an opportunity to read the text in front of class.
