INTEGRATED ENGLISH SKILLS(2)

Integrated English Skills 2 is designed to provide students with opportunities for learning and practicing the English literacy skills needed for university study and the global workplace. It covers reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and vocabulary. In this course, students will be trained in many aspects of academic writing they will need in university courses, preparing them to further their language proficiency. It looks at aspects of critical thinking, rhetoric, and grammatical structures that are necessary for success in academic writing, and includes academic reading, note taking and summarizing, composition, and presentations. Students will utilize a variety of print and digital materials from authentic sources to give them the skills and confidence to achieve the learning outcomes.

By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Expand academic vocabulary base 2. Expand knowledge of word families 3. Comprehend and analyze authentic academic texts 4. Identify and critically evaluate appropriate material from academic and general sources 5. Integrate a variety of sources in writing and spoken presentation 6. Paraphrase and summarize materials using citation 7. Use multiple rhetorical strategies and essay modes in writing assignments 8. Self-edit writing with some assistance from the teacher

he rules for this course are as follows:

1. Attend all lectures.
a. Classes missed without a viable excuse will carry a penalty.
b. If too many classes are missed, a grade of ‘F’ will be given as we per university policy.

2. Be on time.
a. for class.
b. for submission of assignments.

3. Bring all required materials to class.

4. All classroom functions will be conducted in English.
a. Warning for breaking this rule will only be given once.

5. Cell phones/smart phones/laptop computers are not necessary in the classroom.

There are no preqrequisites for this course.

The skills learned in this class will be applicable throughout the rest of a student’s academic career and beyond.

Practical skills include: Presentation skills, group discussion skills, problem-solving skills, second language environment skills.
