ADVANCED ENGLISH CONVERSATION(1)

  1. Course Description
    This course will focus on helping students develop their skills and confidence in conversational English. As such, the main focus of the course will be on providing students with opportunities to communicate in a variety of situations, e.g., pair and group activities. Students will have the opportunity to discuss a broad range of topics, give a variety of different presentations, and enhance their cultural competence in terms of appropriateness of language and idiomatic speech. They will also have opportunities to increase their competence in listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, oral grammar, and conversational strategy use.
  2. Course Objectives
    Increase the advanced English speaking skill and vocabulary of students while also encouraging the development of critical thinking skills of the sort necessary for success in the real world. An ever expanding perception of issues and knowledge of the world - with an emphasis on topics relevant to American Studies.

    This class will be conducted in accordance with university rules and procedures.

  5. Assessment
    Examinations for this course will consist of one-on-one "interviews" with the course instructor. These interviews are timed (10-minutes each) and recorded for subsequent review. For each examination, the instructor will prepare an extremely detailed feedback sheet for each student. Students are also encouraged to seek additional one-on-one feedback about the examination from the instructor, who will be very happy to sit down with each student and go through each item of the examinations to provide even further detailed feedback and tips for improving performance.

    Regular attendance and effective performance during evaluations and examinations.
  7. Practical application of the course
    Development of the ability to effectively discuss important issues with other persons using spoken English. In addition, the emphasis on the development and use of critical thinking skills will prepare students to function and communicate intelligently in a variety of real world situations.
