CULTURE THROUGH ENGLISH 1(LECTURE IN ENGLISH)

  1. Course Description
    우리문화를 세계화시키고, 타문화를 이해하기 위해 요구되는 영어 능력을 배양하기 위한 강좌이다. 학생들이 영어로 된 문화관련 텍스트를 이해하고, 영어로 된 영화나 연극 등을 즐길 수 있고, 나아가 외국인들과 함께 영어로 의사소통 할 수 있도록 한다. 나아가 문화관광부에 의해 한국의 상징(Images of Korea)으로 선택된 주제들(한복, 인삼, 김치, 불고기, 한글 등)에 관한 영어 텍스트를 가지고 문화와 관련된 표현을 익힌다. 문화관광부 및 문화재관리청 등 문화관련 웹사이트를 이용한다.
  2. Course Objectives
    The goals of this class are to enable students to communicate effectively and with confidence about their own culture in English. It is hoped that by the end of the course students will have significantly improved their practical knowledge of English grammar and usage, significantly broadened their specialist vocabulary for Korean culture, increased their familiarity with Korea's official romanization system for the Korean language, developed confidence and fluency in the use of English for conversation, reading, composition and presentation.
  3. Teachnig Method
    Students will be expected to prepare their presentations on time. Presentations must be original work and not copied. Students will also be expected to participate actively in discussion group work. The mid-term and final exams will be based on the feedback provided to students for their presentations.

    Students should be prepared for the following 1. take an active part in group discussion work 2. prepare and give powerpoint presentations to the class 3. revise material covered in class for a mid-term and final exam
  7. Practical application of the course
    The practical use of this course will be to enable Korean students to effectively share their knowledge and enthusiasm for Korean culture with English speakers (this group includes Americans, British, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders and those nations that use English as a second language such as India, Philppines, Pakistan, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Russia and so on). In an age of globalization a good command of English is now essential for Korean studies specialists who want to be active both in an internationalized Korea and in the wider world.
