SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING FOR ENVIRONMENT(LECTURE IN ENGLISH)

  1. Course Description
    Satellite remote sensing is the skill to derive the phenomena on the Earth from space using the electromagnetic wave. It makes possible getting high resolution data in the huge area spatially and temporally. And satellite remote sensing can derive the information at the same area constantly in the extent of the lifetime of satellite. It means that the satellite remote sensing is the essential tool to observe the ever-changing global environment. In this course, we learn about the principle of satellite remote sensing in the first half of the course. Many kinds of satellite remote sensing data derived from the earth-observing satellite such as surface temperature, ocean color, wind, ice concentration will be introduced. In the latter half of the course, we will learn how to search satellite data by the internet and how to handle the data using the free-software.
  2. Course Objectives
    You will understand the following items at the end of this course,

    1. The merit and demerit of the utilization of satellite remote sensing for environmental study
    2. Many kinds of physical/biological factors on the Earth are derived from the satellite remote sensing.
    3. How to search satellite remote sensing data distributed in the internet sites
    4. The simple treatment of satellite remote sensing data using the free-software
  3. Teachnig Method
    The lecture is mainly held using the Power Point.
    At the beginning of a lecture, the new words in the handout will be checked. And I will give the review quizzes from the last lecture. The questions are shown on the screen, and students answer orally. The additional points will be given to the student who answers the quizzes. Futhermore, XO quizzes will be given once for five or six lecture times.

    The followings are class rules of this course.

    1. Please be on time and don’t go out during the lecture, or you will be assumed as “late” or “absent”.
    2. Don’t use your cellular phone during the lecture. If you receive a call in the class room, you will be treated as the absence.
    3. Don’t eat or drink anything during the lecture.

    * If your score does not reach 30% of total score, your grade will be "F". * If you are absent more than 10 lecture times, your grade will be "F".
  6. Requiments
    This course will be held in English, and the distributed hand-outs are written in English also. The handouts will be uploaded to the ‘교수학습지원시스탬’. Please download and print them out before the lecture. The students who attend this course are required to prepare for the next lesson.

    So far, I have allowed students to use an electronic English dictionary in OX quizzes of this course. However, I prohibit usage of electronic dictionary since many students pointed out the possibility of cheating. Please prepare a paper English dictionary or word list in advance.
  7. Practical application of the course
    Students who attend this class will get the knowledge about remote sensing data and the simple analyzing skill of ocean color data using free software. You will be able to improve your skill of making report using PC. At same time, you will learn the technical English in the field of satellite remote sensing and environment through reading hand-outs or listening the lectures.
