ENGLISH FOR PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION(1) (LECTURE IN ENGLISH)

  1. Course Description
    English for Public Administration 1 introduces students to the types of language used when discussing the issues of public administration in the English language. This includes both the technical vocabulary of this field, and the types of structures common in academic and technical discussions. Additionally, students will develop more general types of English skills, suitable for conversations, general reading/writing, and the types of examinations common for entry and advancement in professional life.
  2. Course Objectives
    1. Improve your general English skills in listening, speaking, and reading.
    2. Learn the English vocabulary, phrases, and culture of Public Administration and any type of "business" office.
    3. Prepare for future English lectures in Public Administration.
    4. Develop skills needed for overseas studies or internship.
  3. Teachnig Method
    1. Come to class and be "present" during class meetings: participate in discussions. Be On time. No sleeping in class. Bring your book and any assignments to the classroom! 2. Prepare for class: Do the readings (at least TRY), watch/read the online materials, and look through the next piece of the book before class. 3. Take notes in class, and print out the materials on the 학습자료. (Open book, open notes, on tests). Your notebook will be graded. 4. Complete all assignments. 5. Respect your classmates - listen when they speak, think about their opinions. The tests can include ideas from your classmates!

    Attendance (출석) - 10% minus one point for absence, minus one point for two late arrivals (or other time away from the classroom). Final (기말고사) - 30% A face-to-face interview. Perhaps also a written test. Depends on students. Midterm (중간시험) - 30% Listening and Interview. Notebook & Assignments (과제) - 15% Participation (참여/활동) - 15% Excellent (15) Good (12) Poor (9) -- failure to attend affects participation!

    Ready to speak English everyday. If you English is poor, at least you will try! PC internet access (not all online materials are phone-friendly)
  7. Practical application of the course
    English Language tests are now common for most all jobs. This includes both written tests, such as TOEIC, and Speaking tests or interviews. Being able to read and speak about your subject area, as well as general communication skills, is essential for future professional employment. This course will help you prepare for these: this class is not just "English," it includes information on how business offices work and some general themes in public administration. Tests are about both English and the topics we discuss.
