THEORY OF FASHION DESIGN

  1. Course Description
    패션디자인에 관련된 일반적인 이론을 익힘으로써 패션산업의 주요부분인 디자인 분야를 이해하고 창의적인 디자인을 전개할 수 있는 능력을 키운다.
  2. Course Objectives
    The course aim is for students to develop their individual visual language through experimentation, observation as well as reflection via self and peer review. Students will learn to contextualize their practice through methodical research and analysis, enabling them to formulate a self-initiated project towards the end of the term to produce conclusive visual outcomes. Learning outcomes: Project 1 The ability to experiment with a variety of media (Experimentation) The ability to analyse acquired visual material and the development of ideas ( Analysis/ development) Project 2 The ability to undertake visual research from multiple sources (Research) The ability to define and develop a project context (Research, analysis , development, experimentation ) The ability to develop prototypes and an understanding of basic design principles (Development) The ability to produce conclusive visual outcomes for a given brief (Analysis, Development)
  3. Teachnig Method
    Assignments: Each week you will be given assignments to complete by the following week. These will be discussed the following week in class. There will be an emphasis on peer to peer review! You are required to participate. This will strengthen your analytical as well as articulation skills. Keeping of artwork: At the beginning (orientation session) each student will produce a folder to keep larger scale drawings neatly. Please keep all drawings you make. This is part of the development process. Etiquette in the drawing room: Please do not eat in the drawing room. The studio must be kept in a tidy condition, this includes tidying before and after the class. Material: Please bring adequate material as advised. In the most cost-effective way, please have a variety of media, paper qualities and formats with you. This is your responsibility! Please bring all your work to the tutorials and reviews! Attendance: Please do not be late for the sessions. If you come late it is your responsibility to ensure that your attendance is registered. If you cannot attend a session you must inform the tutor in advance per e mail! You must provide a doctor’s note for sickness related absence. Referencing: You must reference the artist / author of any research material you collect. If the author is unknown, you must provide the source. Tutorials: For individual tutorials, you will be assigned a time slot. IMPORTANT: Please bring all your work to the tutorial. If you find it hard to communicate you can ask a classmate to come with you. TIP: The more visual work you bring the easier it will be.

    Grades: A = Outstanding , B=Good, C= Satisfactory,D= Pass, F=Fail Project 1 (30%) and Project 2 (40%) will be marked holistically You will get a detailed explanation of the marking process in at the briefing. Details of what you have to submit for each project will be explained at the briefing.

    Upon successful completion, students will be able to apply the skills for their further drawing and design classes. Students will be introduced to research, experimentation, drawing and prototyping - which is the basis of the creative and fashion design process.
