INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LINGUISTICS

  1. Course Description
    영어를 보다 체계적이고 논리적으로 이해하기 위하여 영어의 발음과 음운규칙, 형태론, 통사구조, 의미양상, 화용론 등 각 분야를 개관한다. 일반 언어학적 지식을 배경으로 하되 영어를 보다 깊이 있게 이해하는데 국한해서 살펴본다. 언어습득, 영어와 컴퓨터, 영어의 변화, 사회언어학적 과정에서의 영어 등에 관해서도 알아본다.
  2. Course Objectives
    By the end of the semester, you are expected to 1. minimally, have a good overview of the whole field; 2. ideally, have a fairly detailed grasp of the field and be ready to initiate your own investigation; 3. test out the ideas that you study with self-study activities. 4. be prepared for the appropriate section in the National Teacher Certification Examination.
  3. Teachnig Method
    The daily plan 1. Don’t be late: -The door will be closed upon my entry to the class. -After we check your attendance, put your cellular phone or any other electronic devices in your bag. Use of any of these devices in class will be regarded as an absence. -Two late arrivals constitute one absence, with the maximum of four late arrivals allowed. 2. Announcements 3. Hard copy assignments if any must be placed on the instructor’ s desk before class starts. Their soft copies must be uploaded to the CTL site prior to each class (*Both* electronic and hard copies must be submitted before class on a due date starts). No late assignments will be accepted (Do not send your assignments through e-mail or drop in my office. They will not count). 4. Assignments must follow the following requirements. Otherwise, they won’t count: must be double-spaced and stapled. must note all of the following at the top: Your name, the course title, the date the assignment is given (MM/ DD), the textbook title, the chapter/unit, etc., the page number(s), the exercise/practice numbers 5. Lecture, Presentations & Class activities “ English only” policy unless otherwise permitted. Any violation is considered an absence as a penalty. 6. Assignment reminder --- 7. Your can be excused from the class twice with no penalty. From the third absence and on, each undocumented absence will result in a loss of 3 points. Your 7th undocumented absence leads to an automatic F. 8. Assignments for any scheduled absence must be submitted in advance. 9. Any assignments that are written unintelligibly (grammatically or content- or format-wise) may be negatively evaluated. 10. No make-up opportunities will be granted for tests or presentations unless proper official documentation is submitted and approved by the instructor. 11. Due to the University policy, all inquiries and correspondences related to the course must be posted to the Q & A page of the course CTL site.

    *** Your course grade will be given "as is" due to built-in bonus points (5%) (i.e., absolute assessment unless there are too many A's and B's). *** 1. Attendance and Active Participation: 5% 2. Chapter-End Exams: 75% 3. Final Exam: 15% 4. OCW-Based Projects: 10% (You must view the video clips on Youtube, MOOC, or K-OCW BEFORE class and do the activities as instructed before, in, or after class). 5. Required: Chapter-end self-reflection and course evaluation 6. Anyone whose absolute total score falls under 60 in each exam will be required to see the instructor.

    0. This course is open to English education majors only. If you don't meet the eligibility requirement, you are advised to take the same course in the English Language & Literature Dept. 0. No repeaters are allowed. Repeaters are referred to the same course in the English Language & Literature Dept. 1. Do NOT take this class if you do not plan to study very hard or if you are busy with other schedules. Only those who can devote themselves to the course should take it. 2. Do NOT take this class if you complain about or give up on a class that finishes the textbook because you cannot keep up with it. 3. Do NOT take this class if you cannot take a course, the majority of which is taught in English. This means that you must be able to read, write, and discuss in English. 4. Any violations of academic integrity (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, illegal textbooks, etc.) lead to an automatic F in this class.
  7. Practical application of the course
    1. This course lays the foundation for the students' preparation for the National Teacher Certification Examination for those who plan to take it.
    2. This course facilitates cross-linguistic and intercultural understanding for those who do not plan to take the National Teacher Certification Exam.
