HISTORY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE

  1. Course Description
    이 교과목에서는 미국의 초기 식민주의 기간부터 제 2차 세계대전 이후까지의 미국문학과 문학사를 개괄한다. 이 과목의 목적은 문학적, 역사적 중요성으로 인하여 우리의 주목을 끄는 미국문학의 주요 텍스트에 대한 분석과 토론을 통하여 주요 미국 문학작품과 작가들에 대한 지식을 습득하는 것이다.
  2. Course Objectives
    This course will be a survey of American literature and literary history from
    the early colonial period to American literature after World War II. Our goal
    will be to acquire a grasp of the expanding canon of American literature by
    reading some of the established canonical masterpieces and texts that call our
    attention to their literary and historical significance. Figures to be discussed
    will include (but not limited to) William Bradford, Edward Taylor, Jonathan
    Edwards, Benjamin Franklin, Irving, Cooper, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Whitman, Dickinson, Twain, Crane, James, Dreiser, Frost, T.S, Eliot, Pound, Fitzgerald,
    Hemingway, Stein, Faulkner, Eugene O'Neill, and Arthur Miller.
  3. Teachnig Method
    This course will be taught for the most part in Korean and comprised of the instructor's
    lectures and the students' participation.
    Students may be required to make an in-class presentaion on major authors of American Literature.
    Audio-Visual materials will be used.

    Some working knowledge of the English language, especially in listening and reading.
  7. Practical application of the course
    Students interested in American History and American studies (regional studies) will benefit form this course because it explores major American literary writings and their authors in historical and cultural contexts.
