CULTURE AND INTERNATIONAL NURSING

  1. Course Description
    본 교과목은 인간의 건강 현상에 대한 태도와 관념을 사회적 맥락과 환경의 관계에서 추구해야하는 필요성에 따라 간호에 대한 문제성의 규정을 한국 사회와 한국의 문화적 맥락에서 파악하려는 목적을 두고 구체적으로 다음과 간은 내용을 다룬다. 먼저, 문화의 개념, 친족 및 사회조직, 경제체계, 종교 및 정치와 법을 건강현상에 대한 태도와 관념과 관련해서 함께 다룬다. 그리고 퍼스낼리티의 결정요인, 형성과정 및 사회적 퍼스낼리티에 대한 이해를 다루며, 문화차이에 따른 건강, 질병 및 죽음에 대한 이해, 질병의 진단 및 치료방식, 한방과 간호 그리고 치료자와 환자의 관계를 다루고, 또한 생활양식과 풍토병을 다룰 것이다.
  2. Course Objectives
    Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
    1. Recognize and appreciate the historical origin of transcultural nursing and cultural trends and issues influencing the fields of health care. (PO1)
    2. Integrate the knowledge, skills and attitude of cross-cultural care needed for cultural competence. (PO1, PO12)
    3. Demonstrate competence in verbal and non-verbal communication towards an effective therapeutic nurse-client relationship in multicultural health care setting.(PO3, PO12)
    4. Explore the process and content of comprehensive cultural assessment of individuals, family and groups from diverse cultures.(PO1, PO12)
    5. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in understanding various situations related to diversity of culture (PO12)
    6. Utilize evidence-based practices in handling various nursing care situations for diverse culture (PO12)

    Throughout the semester, the students are expected to demonstrate the following:
    1. Punctuality at all times
    2. Proper Conduct and Behavior in and outside the classroom
    3. Acknowledgement and respect to one another's strengths and weaknesses

    1. The student should have necessary background on the Nature and History of Nursing as a Profession as well as structure and function of the human body and simultaneously acquiring concepts on basic nutrition.
    2. The students are expected to display a positive attitude when dealing with the study of diverse culture.
    3. The students are expected to participate in classroom activities and group work throughout the course.
    4. The students are expected to comply with the necessary requirements such as attainment of passing score for various paper and pencil test, homework and individual & group activities.
  7. Practical application of the course
    This course will provide an opportunity for the students to: 1. acquire an enhanced knowledge and background on transcultural nursing relevant for nursing care 2. demonstrate effective and therapeutic interpersonal skills in dealing with various clients across different culture 3. display a positive attitude towards acceptance, understanding and dealing with clients across the lifespan having different cultural and belief practices. 4. render appropriate and effective nursing care to clients with respect to one's culture and beliefs.
