PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

  1. Course Description
    In this course, the student is introduced to the basic concepts of management and organizations. Primary emphasis is given to three primary functions: planning, organizing, and controlling. Additional topics include: organization theory, the global environment, ethics, and decision making.
  2. Course Objectives
    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to complete the following tasks:

    1. Explain the four fundamental functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
    2. Understand the relevance of the concepts and principles of management in terms of how leading corporations apply these principles in today’s business context to enhance their competitive advantage.
    3. Evaluate and articulate the competitive advantage of the corporations for which students would like to work in the future in terms of management concepts and principles.
    4. Apply management concepts and principles to students' career development.
    5. Reflect upon how management skills can be used to enhance the lives of others; discuss ethical dilemmas of management.

    Details of classroom policy and the responsibilities of students such as attendance, classroom participation, and submission of assignments in a timely manner in order to achieve the above objectives of the course will be provided and discussed on the first day of the course.
